In this first installment of John Flanagan's Ranger's Apprentice series, Will, the protagonist, is being chosing to be an apprentice ranger. Unfortuanately, he doesn't know anything about being a ranger, and learns how to be one by the strict and severe teaching of Halt, an already graduated ranger. While learning about how to be a ranger, Will and Halt learn about Morgarath and how he is planning to attack Araluen, the country that they lived in. What I liked about this book is that it is not to compilcated, but with just the right amount of adventure and plot.
This book has a lot of dilemmas that chase after each other. Once one dilemma is fixed, another dilemma appears, chasing after each other. Also, Flanagan describes the characters so well and use the dialogue so creatively that he makes the characters seem real. He makes Will seem friendly and Halt seem quiet. It also is good because it talks about to young kids who are mean to each other at the beginning, but are the best of friends in the end. It is a story of friendship and adventure.
What I didn't like about the book is that there really isn't any adventure until the middle of the book where some adventure finally starts, like a fight between Will and Horace, both of them former wardmates. Then the action finally starts. Then after a couple of chapters, the action slows down and nearly stops until something else major happens and the action restarts again. Some parts of the book make you want to fall asleep because there is no action in there. Just a lot of description.
Don't get me wrong. I still love the book. It's just that it's sometimes really boring at parts.
